The reason why I say all of this is because Saints Row 2 is almost the complete opposite. Despite all the polish, the voice acting, the story, I just didn't enjoy it.
If this is the case, why are so many people's copies gathering dust? I can only speak for myself, but the game was lacking one very important thing. The amount of resources that Rockstar must have poured into the making of the game must have been staggering. The whole game just oozes polish from every polygon. The expansiveness of Liberty City can be a bit daunting. GTA 4 was one of the most massive games ever created. Perhaps the best way to describe Saints Row is the "anti-GTA 4". It is impossible to not compare this game to Grand Theft Auto 4 but if you give both of them an impartial look, they play very differently. Saints Row 2 is the sequel to an xbox 360 only open world crime game. But for final gameplay, especially with GTA Libery City now available, Saint's Row is somewhat lacking.
So for what it is, a twisted humor representation of extreme violence, its a shooting star. Handling and braking characteristics are the same way. Every car is either extremely slow or extremely fast. People and cars disappear as readily as they appear and it can be very annoying at times. As a car passes by, often time by the time the character has turned, the vehicle has already exited the sphere and is no more. There are several visual artifacts visible by even the untrained eye, and there is a very small sphere of influence around the character. While the game could easily purport to be a GTA knockoff, it lacks the fit and finish of the Rockstar franchise.
The gangbanger violence that is left is almost satirical in its form. The game's overall storyline is very well produced with the idea that over-the-top is the goal. Several mainstream actors lend themselves to voice roles for Non-Player Characters (NPCs). The mission play is original, and the player character is well developed in both humanity and sense of direction. But for those that can laugh at the ridiculous without being abosrbed in it, there is redeeming value. This game was never intended for children. Huge drug references (including marijuana as a substance that can be bought and used by the player character). Saint's Row attacks the senses with so much more that it makes San Andreas look like Sesame Street. Parent's be warned, however, as it is probably not the kind of thing you want to see on the living room flatscreen.Ī few years ago Grand Theft Auto (GTA) San Andreas made a splash with all the consumer groups due to its high levels of violence and sexual content (i.e. Saint's Row 2 is unlike any other gaming experience. Please, at least rent it, you will LOVE it so much more then GTA IV, you may never buy another GTA again. Also, there's no blood splatter in this game like in GTA, but thats about it. Although this game is way better then GTA IV, there are some things I still would have liked to see that aren't here, mainly the ability to do more damage to the vehicles. As I've said in other reviews, when a game is developed for Xbox, the developers have to make a choice between gameplay and graphics, THQ chose right and picked gameplay, RockStar picked graphics. The graphics of this game are certainly no where near as good as GTA IV's, but the game is still amazing. Of course, thanks to the Xbox 360, in order to include all these great features there had to be compromises.

Unlike in GTA IV, in Saints Row 2 you have planes, parachutes, stores, property purchasing, gangs, full character customization, a huge city, a huge selection of vehicles, tons of weapons (way more then the lousy 12 included in GTA IV), tons of things to explode, almost everything can be picked up, and far more. Unlike GTA IV which removed everything from San Andreas, Saints Row 2 keeps it all, and yes, I mean ALL. This is exactly what GTA IV should have been, an extension of San Andreas. You'd think RockStar and THQ traded places after playing this masterpiece.
